World Major Shipping Company Develops Market in China

A container ship owned by the world's third biggest shipping company, Peninsula & Oriental Nedlloyd Line, stopped at Xiamen Haicang Harbor Wednesday to load 500 containers of clothes, food and arts and crafts on it for a trip to Britain tomorrow.

The container ship, with a total capacity of 5,468 TEUs, is the largest container ship the harbor has ever received, and one of the five vessels the shipping company employs for new operations between China and Europe.

The new China-Europe route will help shorten the trip from China to Britain from 27 to 21 days, said Adward Van Dord, a manager for the company's China operation.

Earlier this year, the company sent five ships with a loading capacity of 2,900 containers each to open a direct shipping line between Xiamen City of Fujian Province, east China, and the west coast of the United States.

The company will increase its business in the shipping market and improve its services in China, where the economy and trade is growing rapidly, the manager said, adding that Fujian is a major part of the Chinese market.
