Chinese Vice-Premier Meets Israeli Minister

Chinese Vice-Premier Qian Qichen said Thursday that the restoration of the Palestinian people's legitimate national rights accords with relevant resolutions of the United Nations.

It is also a consensus reached by Israel and Palestine, and supported by the international community, he said.

Qian made the remarks in a meeting with Israeli Minister of Regional Cooperation Shimon Peres.

Qian told Peres that he hopes that Israel and Palestine will use their wisdom and continue negotiating, to reach solutions as soon as possible, reiterating that China will continue to make its efforts in this regard.

During the meeting, Peres briefed Qian on recent Camp David talks, the latest development of the Middle East peace talks and Israel's views on the matter, expressing the hope that China would play an even greater role in the peace talks.

Qian said that China has long followed the Middle East peace process. It is a complicated issue that cannot be solved overnight, adding that it is inevitable that sometimes there are difficulties in the negotiations.

However, China believes that as long as the parties concerned adopt an earnest and practical attitude, and have mutual trust and understanding in accordance with relevant UN resolutions and the "land for peace" principle, they will overcome difficulties and push forward peace talks.
