UN Expert Impressed by HK's PrisonA senior official of the United Nations Human Rights Committee was impressed by what he saw at a Hong Kong's prison on Wednesday.Justice P.N. Bhagwati, vice-chairman of the UN committee, said after a visit to Stanley Prison: "I have seen many prisons in different parts of the world but this one which I saw is unique in its cleanliness, humanitarian approach to the inmates and the rehabilitative therapy which is administered to the inmates." "Stanley Prison exemplifies the principle that the object of punishment must be to reform the individual and to make him a responsible, useful citizen." He said the rehabilitative process in Stanley Prison helped to integrate the offenders into the main stream of society on release. "I was extremely impressed by what I saw. I hope and wish that this prison will continue to serve the social object of punishment," he said. Justice Bhagwati toured the book-binding workshop, and saw prisoners working in the printing workshop as well as the workshop for making signages. He also visited the kitchen where food was prepared and cooked by inmates themselves. Justice Bhagwati is visiting Hong Kong between August 13 and 19 to see latest political and social developments.
