German Government To Spend Millions of DM Against Right Extremism

A cabinet meeting of the German government adopted Wednesday a plan to support initiatives and engagement of citizens against right extremism, with the focus on preventive education among youths.

Edith Niehuis, parliamentary state secretary of the Youth Ministry, said that the government will make available for the implementation 75 million Deutsche marks (35 million U.S. dollars out of the European Social fund and call on the German states to provide a matching fund.

The money will be used to support various projects in the next three years, Niehuis said. Among them will be an education program on the employees on suburb public transport, where violence against foreigners by right extremists have been more frequently reported than at other places.

Since later July, a series of attacks on foreigners and Jewish immigrants have aroused alarm and anger among German political and business circles, and prompted them to call for more swift action against right extremist organizations in the country.
