Memorial Garden Inaugurated for 55th Triumph Anniversary


Memorial Garden to Open in Beijing
The inauguration ceremony was held in Beijing Tuesday for a monument and a sculpture garden marking the 55th anniversary of the Chinese people's triumph in the War of Resistance against Japan (1937-45).

The garden of sculptures covering 20 hectares is located in the Fengtai District.

The monument, bearing Chinese President Jiang Zemin's inscription, stands in the center of sculpture garden.

Inside the 22,500-square-meter sculpture area, 38 works of bronze sculpture remind visitors of the heroic spirit of the Chinese people.

Construction of the project started in 1995 in south Wanping, where the war against Japanese invasion broke out in 1937.

Attending Tuesday's ceremony were Jia Qinglin, secretary of the Beijing Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China, He Luli, vice-chairman of China's National People's Congress Standing Committee and other officials. Jia made a speech at the ceremony.
