China to Be World's Major Flower Producer and Consumer

China is taking on the ambitious task of becoming a major producer and consumer in the world floral market, said a top official from the Chinese Florists Association (CFA) Wednesday in Chengdu.

Jiang Zehui, chairwoman of the CFA and president of the Chinese Research Institute of Forestry, made the remark at the opening ceremony of a high-level meeting of the association.

She said China's floral industry faces increasingly tougher challenges as the country moves into the World Trade Organization and adjusts the structure of the country's agriculture sector.

The two-day meeting is scheduled to discuss the country's future strategies for the floral industry, talk about a floral exposition expected to be held in Shunde, in south China's Guangdong Province and hammer out plans for the creation of a floral and horticulture magazine.

With 86,000 ha of floral plantation area, China now produces 1.7 billion branches of fresh flowers, with an annual production value reaching 9.4 billion yuan.
