Construction of Tourism Facilities Begins in Poverty-sticken Area

China has started to build tourism facilities in Guyuan Prefecture of west China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region as an effort by the central government to help poverty-stricken areas.

Seven million yuan will be used in developing the Liupanshan tourism district with an area of over 110 square kilometers as the Central Government's efforts to help Guyuan, a prefecture that had just got enough food and clothing for the local people in 1999.

Tourism is a key project in China's strategy to develop its western regions.

The district, located in the poor mountain areas of southern Ningxia, is rich in tourism resources. The region boasts other scenic spots such as stone grottoes and the summer palace of an ancient king. It has also historical sites where Mao Zedong directed the Red Army some 60 years ago on the Long March.
