New Idea to Bridge World's IT Divide: Report

China expects its telecommunications companies to work more closely with counterparts in other developing countries.

"China and other developing countries should improve co-operation in the information technology sector to narrow the digital gap between developed and developing countries," Vice Minister of Information Industry Lou Qinjian was quoted as saying.

Lou spoke at the Information and Communication Technologies Conference of Developing Countries, which is sponsored by the Ministry of Information Industry, the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific.

Kerstin Leitner, chief UNDP representative, said: "China's experience will help and guide other developing countries."

Leitner said the technology gap between developed and developing countries is widening, with more than 96 percent of mobile phone users living in developed countries.

To reverse this trend, developing countries should work more closely together, Leitner said.
