U.S. Denies Accusation of Backing Plot Against Liberian President

The U.S. ambassador to Liberia on Tuesday dismissed as "false and baseless" a local media report that his government was involved in a plot to assassinate Liberian President Charles Taylor, the News Agency of Nigeria reported.

"The allegation attributed to reliable sources in the Patriot Newspaper edition of Saturday and broadcast on the Liberia Communications Network are completely false and baseless", Ambassador Bismarck Myrick was quoted as saying in Liberia's capital Monrovia.

The pro-government newspaper and radio reported last week that the U.S. government had offered two million U.S. dollars to finance some dissidents to kill Taylor.

Ligerian government, whose ties with the U.S. and its western allies have been soured recently, made no comment on the reports.

Western countries have been accusing Taylor of secretly backing the rebels in Sierra Leone and Taylor in return accused those countries of supporting dissidents to topple him.

Taylor Monday made an announcement that his government would do whatever possible to arrest the dissidents once they were on its

territory.
