First High-Definition TV Network Opens in Shenzhen

China's first wide-band high-definition cable television network was introduced in Shenzhen Monday, which attracted large groups of local residents to watch TV programs broadcast by the network at a big electric appliance store.

The digital cable television system, which was produced by the Shenzhen Skyworth Group, includes high-definition TV terminals and equipment for making programs, transmitting and modulating at TV stations.

The State Development Planning Commission has already granted 24 million yuan (about 2.9 million US dollars) to support the construction of the digital TV station in Shenzhen and will invest another 10 million yuan (about 1.2 million US dollars) to promote the research and production of chips for digital TV.

There are currently more than 300 million TV users in China, and 81 million of them are receiving cable TV programs.

To broadcast high-definition TV programs through satellite and cable TV networks and then put high-definition TV terminals at low and middle levels into the market is a way to speed up the development of the national electronics industry, said Du Baichuan, vice-president of the Chinese Academy of Broadcasting Science.

The popularization of digital television in Shenzhen will become a new economic growth point for the city over the next five years, said an official with the municipal government. It was estimated that the sales volume of digital television in the city will reach 100 billion yuan (about 12 billion US dollars) if 15 percent of the local families buy digital televisions.
