Macao to Build Memorial Park for Its Return

Macao recently started to demolish the temporary hall for the transition of the political power of Macao and is to build on the original site a memorial park for its return to the motherland.

Said temporary hall, located on the seashore of the new port of Macao and neighboring the Macao Culture Center, was completed on the eve of Macao's return to the motherland, at a cost of 60 million Pataca (Macao dollars). On the evening of December 19 last year, the hand-over ceremony, which focused world attention, was held here. Due to its important historical significance, the place has always been a must for tourists to visit in Macao.

It is said that whether to keep this hall or not was for a while a hot topic of conversation among residents of Macao. Many local citizens hoped the hall would be reserved permanently. The government of the SAR therefore invited architects from the hinterland and Hong Kong to conduct strict studies and analyses of the structure of the hall and the project as a whole. They finally came to the conclusion that due to its temporary nature, it is inappropriate to keep the structure permanently.
