Xinjiang Military Command Helps 30,000 Ethnic Farmers and Herdsmen Out of Poverty

Over the past year and more since the Xinjiang Military Command launched the "Program of Help-the-poor in 100 Villages", more than 30,000 local farmers and herdsmen have adequate food and clothing now.

The army unit of the Xinjiang Military Command is garrisoning the frontier minority ethnic regions. At the beginning of last year, the Xinjiang Military Command Party Committee decided to launch the "Program of Help-the-poor in 100 Villages" and, in accordance with the national standard, promptly established more than 200 help-the-poor contingents which, focusing on aiding the poor with human resources, science and technology, information and education, helped the poverty-stricken areas to tap local resources and improve the production conditions. Bringing their own superiority into full play, each military sub-command and armed force, through coordination, won over a total of 5 million yuan for the poor villages to invest in factories, to dig wells and to build roads, thus making electricity and water supply and road transport available in many such villages. Besides, they also mobilized the local militiamen for large-scale capital construction of farmland and water conservancy, for implementation of the afforestation project, and construction of one thousand mu (1 hectare = 15 mu) of apple and pear orchards and other economic forest belt.

Over 30 scientific personnel of the Xinjiang Military Command went to some 60 poor villages and provided them with more than 60 research results and trained 1,100 skilled hands.
