Memorial Garden to Open on Wednesday
A monument and sculpture garden, which is also a memorial to Chinese people's triumph in the War of Resistance against Japan (1937-45), will open to the public in Beijing Wednesday.
Located in the Fengtai District, the garden covers 20 hectares and cost 315 million yuan (about 38 million U.S. dollars). In the five years' building of the garden, 550 families were moved out to make way for it, according to Chinadaily.
Inside the 22,500-square-metre sculpture area, 38 works of traditional Chinese bronze remind visitors of the solemn, stirring war 55 years ago.
The central square covers 2,500 square meters, and the monument bears President Jiang Zemin's autograph, China Daily said.
The sculpture area radiates paths to the rest of the garden, connoting the Chinese people's desire to beat the Japanese invaders.
Japanese troops invaded China in 1937. By the end of 1945, more than 21 million Chinese people had been killed and wounded.
