New Chairman of HK Trade Development Council Appointed

Tung Chee Hwa, chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, has appointed Peter Woo Kwong-ching as chairman of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (TDC), according to a government spokesman Monday.

Woo will succeed Victor Fung, whose appointment as TDC chairman will end on September 30, 2000 and assume the office on October 1 for a two-year period.

Commenting on Woo's appointment, Tung Chee Hwa said, "I am confident that, with his wealth of experience in the business sector as well as in public service, Woo will be able to lead the TDC with vigor and dedication."

Woo was formerly chairman of Wheelock and Co. Ltd. and the Wharf (Holdings) Ltd. He has a long record of public service and has served in various capacities, most recently as chairman of the Hospital Authority from April 1, 1995, to September 30, 2000.

The chief executive also praised Victor Fung for his stewardship of the TDC.

"Dr. Fung has served as chairman of the TDC with great distinction for nine years. Under his able leadership, the TDC has done a great job in promoting Hong Kong's trade and Hong Kong as a premier hub for business.

"I am very grateful to him for his tremendous contribution over such a long period. Dr. Fung has been an outstanding ambassador for Hong Kong all over the world," he said.
