Presidents of Egypt, Russia Discuss Palestinian-Israeli Peace Talks

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak discussed on telephone Monday with Russian President Vladimir Putin the latest developments of the Palestinian-Israeli peace talks, said a senior Egyptian official.

During the telephone conversation initiated by Putin, the two leaders exchanged views on the Mideast conflict and obstacles in the peace process, Egypt's official Middle East News Agency quoted Information Minister Safwat el-Sharif as saying.

Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat visited Moscow on Friday to hold talks with Putin in a bid to win Russia's support for the Palestinian position toward the peace talks, but Putin reportedly cautioned him against making hasty decisions on declaring statehood.

Mubarak and Putin stressed the importance of continuing efforts to help achieve a just and permanent peace based on international legitimacy resolutions for the peoples in the region to enjoy genuine stability, el-Sharif said.

The Egyptian leader said on Sunday the Palestinians can delay declaring statehood beyond their self-imposed deadline of September 13 for a final peace accord with Israel.
