Guangxi Plans to Build 50,000 Ecological Homelands
In 2000, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in southwest China will build 50,000 new ecological homelands, and the number will reach 2.4 million by 2010.
In implementing the strategy for western development, Guangxi is pressing ahead with its "Program of Bringing Wealth to People Through Construction of Ecological Homelands". The specific practice is to build in a farmer's home an ecological homeland which has a virtuous circle of energy, ecology and economy, namely to build a methane pool and to install a 2-3 sq. meter solar energy heater and a firewood-saving kitchen. Furthermore, a farmer with better condition will install a mini generator, and if necessary, he can build a small water tank by his farmland to push forward the development of a small orchard, a small fishpond, a small pig farm and a vegetable garden. The farmers carrying out the pattern of energy ecology are expected to have an additional annual income of over 500 yuan.
