Pakistan Supports Jerusalem as Palestine Capital

Pakistan has supported Jerusalem as the capital of independent Palestinian state, Palestinian leader Yassir Arafat said Sunday.

Arafat, who had a stopover in Islamabad before heading to China at the start of an Asian tour, told reporters that Pakistan Chief Executive General Pervez Musharraf has renewed his country's support for the Palestinian cause.

"I thank the Pakistani nation and government to continue support to the Palestinian cause. Pakistan supports Jerusalem as capital of the independent Palestinian state," Arafat said after meeting with General Musharraf.

Arafat has visited 18 capitals in less than three weeks to seek support for his pledge to declare a Palestinian state on September 13 and for Palestinian sovereignty over East Jerusalem.

The Palestinian leader said that he briefed General Musharraf about last month's Camp Davis summit, which failed over the future of Jerusalem.

Arafat was accorded warm welcome when he arrived in Islamabad earlier on Sunday night.
