HK's Eligible Voters Urged to Cast Their Ballots

Michael Suen, acting secretary of administration of Hong Kong, Saturday urged all registered voters to exercise their civic rights by casting their ballots at the Legislative Council Elections on September 10 this year.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 2000 Legislative Council Elections Kowloon East Regional Carnival, Suen said: "Eligible voters should grasp the opportunity to cast their votes on the polling day so that they can elect their representatives to the Legislative Council."

Noting that the record 53 percent voter turnout rate in the 1998 Legislative Council Elections was quite encouraging, Suen hoped that the result of this year's elections would be even better.

He also launched the newly published 2000 Election Special booklet at the carnival.

The colorful booklet outlined the power and functions of the Legislative Council, the election system, polling procedures, the lists of candidates and other related information of the assembly.

"To help the public know more about the election system and the candidates, as well as encourage them to cast their votes on the polling day, we have published more than 400,000 copies of booklet for collection by members of the public," Suen said.

Copies of the booklet will be made available for collection by members of the public at district offices and shopping arcades of the Housing Department from next week.
