Guangzhou to Build Rubbish-Burning Power PlantThis capital of south China's Guangdong Province is planning to build a rubbish-burning power plant to help tackle the problem of rubbish in the city.The total investment in the plant will amount to 700 million yuan, and the designed daily power output will be 450,000 kwh. Occupying 90,000 sq m, the plant will handle 900 tons of rubbish a day, accounting for 20 percent of the total rubbish collected daily in the city. Guo Shubo, head of the preparation work for the plant, said that the environmental protection index of rubbish burned in the plant will reach the standard set by the European Union. According to Guo, the construction of the plant will be done by a German company, while the operator of the plant will be a French company. In recent years, Guangzhou's rubbish has been increasing alarmingly. In 1990, the daily amount was 2,100 tons, but it rose to 4,500 tons in 1999, and is expected to reach 6,500 tons in 2005. Meanwhile, Guangzhou plans to build another rubbish-burning power plant, with a daily burning capacity of 2,000 tons. |
