China to Accelerate Development of Software Industry

China is to strengthen its support of software industry in the next five years, said an official of the Ministry of Science and Technology.

Duan Ruichun, deputy Secretary General of the ministry said Friday at a press conference on evaluating national geological information system (GIS) that China 's software industry has focused on GIS software and computer aided design (CAD) and computer integrated manufacturing (CIMS) software.

He said MapGIS software has played an important role in China's successful launching of its first experimental spacecraft. Other GIS software has been applied widely in resources, environment, telecommunications, agriculture and the military.

He said that software industry is the core of the information industry. The latter is expected to play a key role in China's rapid social and economic growth in the 21st century.

To encourage software ventures to become share holding ones and to get listed on stock exchanges, government departments will launch training classes for senior administrative personnel from software ventures.

Xu Guanhua, vice-Minister of Science and Technology, said earlier this year that China's technological innovation fund will offer more financial help to more software projects in 2000.

A sample survey indicated that nearly 30 percent of the GIS software in use is made in China.

China has established 12 state-level software production bases. Over 200 software ventures were registered by the end of 1999.
