12 Officials Punished for Reporting False StatisticsIn Jiange, southwest China's Sichuan Province, 12 township officials were recently punished by local judicial departments for reporting false statistics to higher authorities. They were found to have submitted false statistical reports to the higher level of government last year to show off their work achievement. An investigation found that only five of the towns' reports, among the county's 57 towns, tallied up statistics correctly without changing the facts. These officials have been disciplined in accordance with China's Law of Statistics and Sichuan's relevant rules and regulations. Liu Hong, director of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), said at a national meeting of the heads of local statistics bureaus early this year that the central government will adopt stronger law enforcement measures to safeguard the integrity of official figures. Any official who is found to have reported false statistics to higher authorities will be dismissed from their position, Liu said. |
