Non-Communist Party's Anniversary MarkedA grand meeting was held at the Great Hall of the People Friday in Beijing to mark the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese Peasants and Workers Democratic Party (CPWDP), one of China's non-Communist parties.Jiang Zemin, the Chinese president and general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, wrote in calligraphic brush strokes "Unite and Strive for the Rejuvenation of the Chinese nation" for the occasion. On behalf of the CPC Central Committee, Li Ruihuan, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, attended and addressed the meeting. Li, also chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, spoke highly of the CPWDP's glorious history of patriotism and its close cooperation with the CPC over the past decades. With the approach of the 21st century, all the political parties should better shoulder their missions entrusted by the people, focus their attention on China's economic development and develop a socialist democracy, said Li. Jiang Zhenghua, president of the CPWDP and vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, called on the party and its members to carry on the patriotic tradition and continue close cooperation with the CPC. The CPWDP was originally called the "Provisional Action Committee of the Kuomintang", founded in Shanghai in August 1930 in Shanghai by some of the Kuomintang leftists and other patriotic intellectuals. It was changed into the present name in 1947. The party advanced the policy of continuing its cooperation with the CPC in the struggle for peace and democracy. The CPWDP is one of the eight non-Communist parties in China. Its members mainly work in the fields of medicine, education, and science. |
