Literature, Art and Sports of Ethnic People Flourish in China

The ethnic cultures of China's 55 minority nationalities with their exotic styles and diversified forms are an important part of the culture of the Chinese nation. Great store has been set by the Chinese government to its inheritance, protection and development, regarding it as a very important work for promoting the progress and development of the ethnic peoples so as to realize common prosperity of all nationalities. In this way, the work in the field of literature and art, health work and sports of the ethnic peoples can therefore be developed and prospered.

China sees an unprecedented prosperity in work of art and literature. Great attention has been paid by our party and governments at all levels to the development of ethnic art and literature, and various measures have been taken to make it sure that the traditional ethnic culture and art have successors. So far there are 24 art schools and institutes designed for nurturing art talents from among the ethnic peoples. Statistics show that China has 59 ethnic song and dance troupes and 526 art performance groups in the autonomous regions for ethnic peoples. All minority nationalities have their own writers, and in the Chinese Writers' Association there are over 600 ethnic writers, accounting for 11.1 % of its total membership. With the development and prosperity of China's ethnic art and literature, a lot of literature and art works have cropped up and some art workers are quite active on the Chinese stages, TV screens, and in the fields of creative art and literature.

Fast development has also been made in health work and sports among the ethnic people. The majority of the ethnic people are living in the outlying or frontier areas with poor natural conditions where traffic was not convenient with few available doctors and medicine. Diseases were on the rampage before liberation and all these had done them a great harm. Great changes have taken place since the founding of new China. Health networks have been formed in cities and villages. Up to now, ethnic hospitals have been increased to 127 from 76, including 52 Tibetan hospitals and medicines, 41 Inner Mongolians, 26 Uygurs and 8 other ethnic hospitals. To improve the health, inherit, protect and develop the traditional culture of the ethnic peoples, over 290 traditional sports activities have been collected and conducted. Starting from 1982 onwards, the national ethnic sports games have become a grand gathering for the promotion of national unity of all the people in China.
