Wuhan Police Crack Fake Medicine Case

On August 9, the Wuhan Public Security Bureau economic crimes division announced that they cracked a fake pharmaceutical operation whose distribution reached seven provinces. The police have apprehended a suspect named Chen Jinfa.

On May 24, a Wuhan pharmaceutical company purchased 500 bottles of stomach medicine worth 77,000 renminbi from Guangdong Shenji Pharmaceutical Co. and resold it to a hospital in Wuhan.

On June 6, a patient took the medicine but didn't feel any better. The patient inquired with the hospital, who immediately notified their pharmaceutical supplier, a Swedish pharmaceutical manufacturer based in Wuxi. The company's preliminary investigation suggested that the medicine was fake.

On June 30, the case was reported to the Wuhan Public Security Bureau economic crimes division, which traced the source of the fake medicine. That afternoon, the arrested the suspect Chen Jinfa of Jiangsu.

After interrogating Chen, he admitted to selling only 500 bottles. The investigators discovered that Chen received the fake medicine from Australia via a Taiwanese named Du Mo, then packaged them as medicine. Chen received false documentation from an assistant manager at Guangdong Shenji Pharmaceutical Co.

Since last November, Chen has sold 6,800 bottles of fake medicine in seven provinces including Shanghai, Zhejiang, Guangdon and Wuhan, worth 1.04 million yuan and received 410,000 yuan in bribes.
