Shanghai Telecom Kick Off "Family Online Project"

A "Family Online Project", aiming to upgrade public accession to Internet and lure more web subscribers, was launched by Shanghai Telecom on Tuesday.

According to the project, Shanghai Telecom has already set up a high-capacity local telephone network with a program-controlled switch center holding 6,670,000 lines and 5,272,000 users.

And Shanghai Online II, China's largest urban high speed broadband information network, has completed construction recently. The network covers 90 per cent of the city's residential and office areas with optical fibre.

In addition, Shanghai Telecom is to build a high-capacity international optical fibre network reaching US, Europe and other Asia countries. And the local broadband network of Shanghai Telecom will cover four million users at the end of this year.

Shanghai currently has an Internet accession platform which can support up to 1.5 million users and an Internet channel with a 300M outway bandwidth.

The project of Shanghai Telecom is part of China Telecom's recent move to improve customer services and upgrade telecommunications infrastructure throughout the country.

Nanjing Telecom, China Telecom's local subsidiary in Jiangsu Province, has cut monthly Internet accession fee by half recently, which sparkled an online frenzy in Nanjing.

Statistics of China Internet Network Information Center(CNNIC) revealed that nearly 60 per cent of the domestic web users surf the Internet at home.
