MII Stops Further Approval of PAS Service by China Telecom

China's Ministry of Information Industry (MII) issued Wednesday a prohibition against further construction and sale of personal access system(PAS) by China Telecom, according to an official source from MII, as is reported by Chinadaily.

The source said MII's ban is on the fact that PAS service construction is a high-cost and low-efficient investment by some domestic enterprises. Besides, the PAS service has occupied too much fixed network capacity in the service areas.

China Mobile and China Unicom, the two largest mobile telecom groups in China, hail the decision as wise, because China Telecom's PAS service has led to disputes between mobile phone and fixed line telephone providers.

PAS provides wireless mobile services on the same network that provides ordinary fixed service. PAS subscribers get the convenience of personal access with the Airstar 65 gram, 800 standby-hour digital pocket phone and one-number, city-wide mobility.
