More Academic Exchanges Called for Across Taiwan Straits

Young scientists on both sides of the Taiwan Straits Thursday called for more exchanges on science and technology between them to facilitate the common prosperity of the Chinese people.

A three-day seminar on academic exchanges between young scientists across the Straits opened in Beijing Thursday, sponsored by the China Association of Science and Technology (CAST).

Hu Qiheng, vice-chairman of the CAST, said academic exchanges between scientists across the Straits helps the flow of information on academic ideas and achievements.

"But more importantly, the exchange will promote mutual understanding between them and build bridges of deep friendship. This will eventually benefit people on both sides of the Taiwan Straits," said Hu.

Ting I-Ni, president of the Across-Straits Academic and Cultural Exchange Society, expects more cooperation in research between the two sides to create a better future for the Chinese people across the Straits.

The 70 young scientists are mainly from Qinghua University, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Xi'an Institute of Technology and Beijing University of Science and Technology in the mainland, and 14 universities in Taiwan.

Following the three-day seminar on agriculture, information technology, biotechnology, some of the scientists are expected to visit Chengdu, capital city of southwest China's Sichuan Province.

This is the second seminar of its kind. Last year, CAST also held a seminar on cooperation in the 21st century, attended by young scientists from both sides of the Taiwan Straits.
