NW Province Takes Advantages of Cultural Relics for Development
The northwestern China province of Gansu hopes to use its rich cultural heritage to raise its attractiveness and profile both at home and abroad, a senior official said Thursday in Lanzhou.
In an exclusive interview with Xinhua, the secretary of the provincial committee of the Communist Party of China, Sun Ying, said that Gansu has a rich cultural heritage and intends to make full use of this heritage in China's endeavor to develop the vast western regions.
Gansu boasts many historic cultural relics, including grottoes, the Great Wall and painted pottery. Its famous Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes has been eulogized as "treasures of human art" and a "museum of oriental art." "Cultural heritage is our name card," said Governor Sun.
With its rich cultural heritage, the northwestern province hopes to its develop tourism industry and protect the vast amount of cultural treasures, Sun said.
A number of museums will be built focusing on the Silk Road. However, Sun admitted that it is difficult to protect all these relics while at the same promote the tourism industry.
The province is determined to protect and manage cultural relics even if this means sacrificing certain economic benefits.
Gansu has 59 museums, four memorials, 400,000 cultural relics. Of these relics, 30 are national cultural treasures.
