Societies Support Hong Kong SAR GovernmentOver 300 societies and associations throughout the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) jointly issued a statement Wednesday to support the government to continue its efforts to build Hong Kong into an even more beautiful, world-class city.In the statement, entitled "Hong Kong Is My Home", leaders from these organizations called on the whole community to support the SAR government to implement the principle of "One Country, Two Systems" and the Basic Law to further the maintenance of Hong Kong's stability and prosperity. They said that the current reforms introduced by the SAR government in education, health care, environment protection, property and pubic servant system conform to the development of the global new economy and help enhance Hong Kong's competitiveness as a whole and lay a solid foundation for its long-term development. It is quite normal that new problems may rise in the course of the reforms and it is understandable that attitudes and opinions to the reforms may be different, but the opinions should be constructive and taken into consideration the overall situation, the leaders said. They also expressed their firm support to the government's action to crack down on those lawbreakers, who were identified to set fire on a government building recently, in order to maintain Hong Kong's legal system and social stability. The statement hailed the great achievements the SAR government led by Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa made in maintaining Hong Kong's democracy and legal system over the past three years. It attributed the good social order, the unchanged life style and the success of economic recovery from Asian financial crisis to the joint efforts made by the government and the whole community. The statement was issued at a forum organized by 12 major Hong Kong non-governmental societies and associations. Secretary for Justice Elsie Leung delivered at the meeting a speech on the implementation of the Basic Law. |
