Taiwan Compatriots Commemorate Late Magistrate

Hundreds of Taiwan compatriots from Kaohsiung came to central China's Henan Province, bringing with them water from the island to commemorate Cao Jin, who contributed to Taiwan's water conservation construction.

Cao Jin, born in Qinyang, a city in Henan, was dispatched to Taiwan as the magistrate of the Fengshan county during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). There, Cao led the local residents to build Taiwan's largest water conservation project, with a length of 130 km., to resist drought.

During Cao's eight years in Taiwan, he also donated money to set up schools. Taiwan compatriots built a memorial hall for Cao, holding grand memorial activities there on November 1 every year.

Qinyang Officials said they will rebuild Cao's house for the Taiwan compatriots to honor him.

Qinyang No.1 Primary School and a primary school in Fengshan established friendly ties this year. The two schools will exchange visits and conduct various activities every year.
