Wahid Could Lose Powers to MegawatiA coalition of major Indonesian political parties has begun moves to transfer power from President Abdurrahman Wahid to his deputy, Megawati Sukarnoputri, according to a report of ABC( Australian Broadcasting Corporation).Representatives from six parties have hatched a plan to strip President Wahid of his power, handing greater responsibility to Vice President Megawati Sukarnoputri, effectively reducing the Indonesian leader to a figurehead. The representatives will put a decree to the current session of the People's Consultative Assembly, a meeting of Indonesia's highest law-makers, recommending Dr Wahid become a head of state. Under the plan, Ms Megawati would handle the day-to-day technical tasks of running government. President Wahid is yet to agree to the new power-sharing plan but he has been warned he could face impeachment if he does not agree. On Monday, he delivered an accountability speech to the People's Consultative Assembly during which he apologised for a poor performance as leader during his 10 months in office. |
