Lebanese Troops, Police Enter South LebanonLebanese troops and police were deployed in South Lebanon to join U.N. peacekeepers early Wednesday morning, Orient Radio reported.A convoy of trucks and armed vehicles carrying soldiers were seen headed down to south from central Beirut. According to Lebanese Interior Minister Michel Murr, the force comprises 500 soldiers and 500 policemen. A military spokesman said that the security force will be stationed in Binnt Jbail area, just 10 kilometers away from the Israeli border, and the Christian town of Marjayoun, which used to be the seat of Israeli-allied South Lebanon Army. Murr has said the security force will not deploy along the border with Israel which will be under UN peacekeepers' guard. South Lebanon has been controlled by Hezbollah guerrillas since the Israeli withdrawal in May after 22 years of occupation. |
