Mubarak, Arafat Begin Talks on Mideast Peace Process

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak began a session of talks with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat Wednesday morning on the Palestinian-Israeli peace negotiations.

Details of the meeting were not immediately available. But Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa said on Tuesday the two leaders will discuss the latest developments of the Middle East peace process, especially the negotiations on the Palestinian track.

Arafat was expected to brief Mubarak on his ongoing Arab and international tour to rally support for the Palestinians' position on the peace talks with Israel, in particular on Jerusalem, Moussa said.

Arafat, who arrived here late Tuesday, frequently visits Egypt to consult with Mubarak and get advice from him on the Mideast peace talks. He last saw the Egyptian leader in the Egyptian port city of Alexandria on August 2 after visiting some Arab countries.

Since last Thursday, Arafat has also traveled to South Africa, Turkey, Libya, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar.
