Kazakhstan Fire Destroys China's Wild Almond Nature Reserve
A fire which broke out in a grassland in
Kazakhstan
on Sunday destroyed completely the world's largest wild almond nature reserve totaling 400 hectares in Yumin County, northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
The fire broke out at 13:35 pm on Sunday and quickly swept across the nature reserve due to strong winds. The fire lasted more than 10 hours. Only a few almond trees were saved despite the efforts of local residents' and soldiers.
According to a local official with the forestry bureau, the 400 hectares of almond trees could produce over 300 tons of almond a year.
