Gene Pool to Work Hands to the Bone

China's first human bone gene pool for bones of various ages is to be set up so that more can be discovered about ancient societies.

Jointly founded by the Shanghai Nature Museum and the Human Genetics Institute of Fudan University, the gene pool will collect human bones unearthed in different regions of China.

Modern technology will be used to extract DNA from the bones, experts said.

The gene pool has received support and financial aid from the South Centre of China's National Human Genes Programme.

"This is a meaningful event. People can learn more accurately about human evolution in China through directly looking at genetic data," said Chen Zhu, an academician at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and head of the South Centre.

In recent years, it has become more common worldwide to use modern technology to extract DNA from ancient human bones in order to study ancient human societies, migration, diseases and other historical puzzles.
