Sichuan Police Crack Down on Fake Cigarette Makers

The Sichuan Provincial Public Security Department and the provincial tobacco monopoly bureau have jointly launched a battle against the manufacturing of fake cigarettes and closed down an illegal cigarette plant.

The case is said to be the biggest of its kind in this southwest China province since the founding of new China in 1949.

On the evening of August 4, local police and inspectors from the provincial tobacco monopoly bureau discovered and shut down the plant, confiscating large quantities of finished and semi-finished fake cigarettes, cut tobacco and tobacco leaves. They also seized six sets of advanced equipment for making cigarettes.

The suspects used a large abandoned warehouse to make fake cigarettes under the pretext of producing fodder, according to the local police. The plant, located beside the section of the Chengdu-Chongqing highway in Longchang County, Neijiang City, could produce 50 to 100 cases of cigarettes a day, the police said.

The local police are now hunting for the suspects.
