Chinese Company to Join in Reconstruction of Power Station

A Chinese company has signed a 26 million U.S. dollar contract with the Ministry of Industry, Mines and Energy on the renovation of the Kirirom hydropower station, English newspaper Cambodia Daily reported Tuesday.

Under the contract, The China Electric Power Technology Import & Export Corporation (CETIC) will reconstruct one of three earth- filled dams, the Kirirom 1 Hydropower Project. And it also will rebuild two new turbines and reinstall a 110 kilowatt-hour transmission line to Phnom Penh.

The Cambodian government recently has approved the renovation of the Kirirom hydropower station, located at about 110 km southwest of the capital in the Kompong Speu province, which was ruined in the long-lasted civil war.

The reconstruction project is planned to begin in mid-2001 and be completed by early 2003.
