China's Mushroom-Growing Techniques Help WorldMushroom-growing techniques developed in China have been widely copied around the world, according to an international conference held here recently on poverty relief through growing mushrooms. Some 149 foreign experts from 45 countries, including Egypt, Brazil, Iraq and Yugoslavia, have come to China to learn the techniques. A national mushroom lab or mushroom-growing center have been established in Brazil and Iraq, respectively. Invented by Prof. Lin Zhanxi of Fujian University in east China, the techniques are used to cultivate mushrooms for food or for medical purposes by using grass, stalks or straw, instead of using wood as in the past. This not only reduces production cost, it also increases the utilization rate of solar and biological energy, and thus helps protect and improve the ecological environment, experts said. It has the great potential for application in regions that suffer from drought and semi-drought worldwide, and thus is suitable for poverty-relief programs, experts added. |
