Green Food Industry Enjoy Bright Prospect

China's relatively young green food industry will thrive in the 21st century as people begin to care more about their nutrition and health.

Although its prices are about 20 percent higher than traditional food, green food sales in the country are expected to grow and reach 20 billion yuan in the next several years, according to the Guanming Daily.

As a new industry, green food has been noted for its natural processing, production that does not emit pollutants and strict quality control.

So far, over 1,000 kinds of food have been categorized as green across the country, according to the newspaper.

As one of the pioneers of the green food industry, Shanghai produces only about 280,000 tons of green food a year, which accounts for 0.6 percent of the city's food consumption.

A recent survey showed that over 80 percent of Shanghai residents hope to shift their consumption to green food, and some 70 percent said they were unsatisfied with the variety and supply of green food.
