Fish Cornea Transplant Helps Restore Eyesight

A young man's debilitating eyesight has improved after undergoing a cornea transplant using the cornea of a fish, the first transplant of its kind in China, which also gives hope to many other people with cornea problems.

Xu Xiaoyong, 19, a resident in Shenzhen, in South China's Guangdong Province, suffered from a cornea ulceration in his left eye last June, according to today's "China Youth Daily".

He was in urgent need of a cornea transplant, but the hospital couldn't find a proper human cornea transplant donor. Doctors decided to use a fish cornea instead of a human one on July 5.

Xu left the hospital with improved eyesight on August 6. Doctors predicted that his eyesight will continue to improve over time.

Statistics show that half of the blindness that occurs among Chinese people is due to cornea problem. Using the fish cornea has provided a new alternative material for cornea transplants, according to the paper.
