Taiwan Businessmen Invited to Invest in Mainland Agriculture

A new around of agricultural restructuring supervised by the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture has created an opportunity for investors from Taiwan, said Vice-Minister of Agriculture Liu Chengguo at Monday's Cross-Straits Agricultural Cooperation Seminar in Harbin.

China is committed to improving the quality of farm produce, accelerating the growth of the animal husbandry and breeding industries, and upgrading agricultural machinery, which has created a considerable market for Taiwan investors, the vice-minister said.

He added that Taiwan has advanced agriculture. Its experience is of great value for reference in the rural reform and the implementation of mechanized farming in the inland areas.

It is in the interests of both sides of the straits to combine the advantages in agricultural resources, labor and research achievements from the Chinese mainland with investment, technology and quality agricultural products from Taiwan.

Officials from many agricultural provinces attending the seminar vowed to optimize their investment environment and services. More preferencial policies on approval formalities, taxation and land use are expected to be extended to investors in agriculture from Taiwan, the officials said.

So far, Taiwan's investment in agricultural projects centers on Guangdong, Fujian, Hainan and Shandong provinces in southern and eastern China. More investments are expected to flow further inland to places such as the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in western China and Heilongjiang Province in the northeast.
