Senior PLA Officer Meets Syrian Army Delegation

Xiong Guangkai, deputy chief of the General Staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), met Monday with a Syrian army delegation headed by Mohammad Saleh Al-Rifaei, chief of the Officers' Affairs Department of the Syrian armed forces.

Xiong spoke highly of the traditional friendship between the two countries and the consistent progress in their relations since the establishment of diplomatic relations.

He thanked the Syrian government for its adherence to the one-China policy, and reaffirmed the Chinese government's position on the Middle East peace process. He also said that the PLA is willing to increase communications with the Syrian armed forces in an all-round way.

Saleh Al-Rifaei said Syria values highly its relationship with China, and hopes that cooperation between the two armies will be further reinforced.

He also expressed the hope that China, as an important force for safeguarding world peace and stability, will play a bigger role in world affairs, especially in the peace process in the Middle East.
