Northeast China's Liaoning Province, one of the oldest industrial bases in the country, is toopen wider to investment from Taiwan, a senior local official said Monday.

Wen Shizhen, secretary of the Liaoning Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China, told reporters from the mainland and Taiwan that Liaoning welcomes Taiwan investors to support the reforms of its state-owned enterprises.

Wen said that he expects the economic exchanges between Liaoning and Taiwan to be promoted to a higher level.

In the past two decades, more than 2,800 Taiwan-funded enterprises have been set up in Liaoning, with a total investment of more than two billion US dollars.

He said that in recent years the investment from Taiwan businessmen has been on the increase.

He said that Liaoning is now readjusting its industries, and it is making efforts to develop the light, high-technology and tertiary industries. Taiwan is taking the lead in these sectors, which provides an opportunity for the two sides to cooperate.

He said that besides the petrochemicals, machine-building and electronic information industries, Liaoning welcomes businessmen from Taiwan's finance, insurance and trade sectors, adding that the agricultural sector in Liaoning will also soon open wider.
