College Teachers Bound for African Classroom

The Ministry of Education has started an advertising campaign for the first time to recruit Chinese college teachers to work in Africa.

This year's recruits will be working in Mali and Gabon, according to today's China Daily.

The ad was published in the People's Daily on June 30, recruiting four college teaching positions in mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology.

The ministry said the ad had been well received but did not say exactly how many applications were received.

The applicants, being able to teach in French and 27-58 years old, must currently be college teachers or researchers who have taught in the past five years.

Applicants, ranging from recent college graduates to experienced professors, were still coming in after the July 20 deadline. This reflects teachers' enthusiasm for the academic exchange program, said Liu Chenggang, vice-division chief of the International Co-operation and Exchange Department under the Ministry of Education.

The Ministry began to dispatch Chinese teachers to foreign countries in the 1960s, mostly to African countries.
