Summer Camp Opens for Overseas Children to Learn Chinese
Aimed at helping overseas children to learn Chinese, a summer camp sponsored by the Overseas Edition of People's Daily was opened Sunday. Editor-in-Chief of People's Daily Xu Zhongtian wrote down "Flowers in Spring and Fruits in Fall" as an expression of congratulations, and Editor-in-Chief of the Overseas Edition Ding Zhenhai presented the camp flag.
More than 60 children from the United States, Canada, Germany, Britain, the Netherlands, Portugal and Japan attended the camp. Aged between 7-16, they are children of Chinese working or studying abroad, with some of them having attended the previous three camps. At the opening ceremony, a student, Zhu Sijie, from the Netherlands and Mr. Wang Huiyao from Canada made speeches on behalf of children's parents respectively.
The overseas edition of People's Daily has successfully organized three such camps in the past, which had received strong repercussions from readers both at home and abroad and attracted group after group of children to participate. A series of colorful activities will be held during the event, such as Chinese lessons, get-togethers and exchanges with Beijing children of the same age. They will also attend the flag-hoisting ceremony at the Tiananmen Square and go on tours to the Great Wall, Summer Palace and Chengde Mountain Villa. Through these activities, they can improve their Chinese and acquire a deeper understanding of the brilliant culture and long history of our motherland.
