Successful Game Bid Will Promote HK's Int'l Standing

Success in bidding for the Asian Games in 2006 will further elevate Hong Kong's standing in the international sports arena, Hong Kong's Acting Secretary for Home Affairs, Leo Kwan, said on Sunday.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Torch Relay at Tsim Sha Tsui East Promenade, Kwan said success in Hong Kong's bid would also enhance residents' interest in sports.

"I hope that while the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government is fully backing this endeavor, different sectors of the community could be united in giving their full support," he said.

Also officiating in the event were President of the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, Timothy Fok Tsun-ting; Acting Director of Leisure and Cultural Services, Lolly Chiu; and General Manager - Television Broadcasting of Television Broadcasts Limited, T.K. Ho.

The Olympic Torch Relay was jointly organized by the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong; Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) and TVB to pledge support for Hong Kong 's participation in the coming Olympic Games and its bid for the 2006 Asian Games.
