Another Suspect Responsible for June 30 Explosion Detained

Local police in Jiangmen City in south China's Guangdong Province Friday detained Liang Zhijian, another suspect held responsible for a major explosion in a local fireworks factory which took place on June 30.

Six other suspects have also been detained by police.

Investigators found that in March 1993, the 47 year old Liang was an employee with the Pengjiang Branch of the Jiangmen Bureau of Public Security. He was in charge of explosives, but abused his power and approved Jiangmen Local Product High-Grade Fireworks Factory to add four more workshops. This clearly violated safety regulations.

The investigators concluded that Liang was directly responsibility for the June 30 explosion.

According to earlier reports, at least 35 people were killed, and 167 others were injured during the explosion. The State Council sent a special team to investigate the cause of the explosion.

After the explosion, Guangdong Provincial Government convened an emergency meeting to cease the production of all fireworks factories and manufacturers of cigarette lighters in the province.
