Chinese Internet PoliceA newly established police force in east China's Anhui province has dealt with a number of Internet crimes over the past few weeks.The provincial Internet police force is the first of its kind in China. Other 20 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions around China are preparing to establish such police forces. Tian Yangchang, head of the Anhui Internet police, said the main task of the group is to administrate and maintain order on computer networks. The Anhui Internet police has already handled such on-line criminal cases as cheating, property embezzlement and pornography. The Anhui Internet Police has also assisted local banks to discover and plug in loopholes in electronic information networks and trained many volunteers as electronic security guards. The police task force has cooperated closely with the local press to alert computer users of viruses and with scientific research institutes to develop filter programs for families with young kids. China now has more than 15 million Internet users. The number is still growing at a speed of 100 percent every year. |
