Beijing Selects Officials by Soliciting Public Opinion

Beijing municipal government has not promoted two officials after gauging what public opinion had to say about them.

The municipal government began to publicize the name list of officials that it intended to promote to bureau chief or section leader positions in the latter half of last year. The municipal government solicited opinions about the officials who were to be promoted from the general public and then decided whether they would be promoted or not.

The local government is using such methods when considering the appointment or promotion of officials.

The city government publicized the names of 222 officials to be promoted, but two of them was not promoted.

An official from the Personnel Bureau of the city government said that so far Beijing has publicized names of officials to be promoted in 18 administrative districts and counties. It will extend the practice of soliciting opinions from the general public on what they think about officials so as to make the selection more open and fair.
