Tibetan Remains Core Subject in Schools

Tibetan has always been the core subject and one of the major teaching languages at schools in Tibet, a senior local official said Friday.

Danzim, vice chairman of the Tibetan Language Instruction Committee of Tibet Autonomous Region, said at the conclusion of a national work meeting on Tibetan language teaching that almost all primary schools in Tibet are teaching Tibetan as the mother tongue. Many other courses are also taught in Tibetan at the schools.

Tibet has already developed a complete set of text books in the Tibetan language, including 181 text books containing 16 courses taught at primary, middle and senior middle schools. It has also published 122 Tibetan-language reference books and 16 teachers course manuals.

At the same time, the autonomous region has published eight Tibetan-Chinese dictionaries, each specialized in one specific field of study. The dictionaries have more than 120,000 entries.

The autonomous region has also produced many Tibetan-language teaching software and audio and video tapes.

Since 1989, Tibet University has trained 1,438 middle school teachers in the Tibetan language and 313 Tibetan translators and researchers. The university has also helped to compile Tibetan text books for 19 courses at primary, middle and senior middle schools.
